Formerly a 1960s building used for offices, the building of 5 Manhattan West lies currently in one of the United States' largest developments. Tasked to turn this brutalist building into urban housing, the studio for this project formulated concepts around the theme of 'inner worlds.' Informed by Manhattan's floating population, the following project mixes short-term and long-term apartment units to create dynamic means of social interaction. Aesthetically, our solution expresses the existing structural members of the building, while at the same time, adding polycarbonate panels to the exterior to allow for resident privacy and take a commemorative stance on its previously industrial nature. With amenities informed by Lucasz Stanek's definition of collective luxuries, the architecture featured has a waterpark, winter garden, bar, art gallery, and play tower scattered throughout the building to bring the public in and encourage residents to circulate throughout the building.
